Methanol, also known as hydroxymethane, is an organic compound and the simplest structured saturated monohydrate. Its chemical formula is CH3OH, CAS number is 67-56-1, molecular weight is 32.04, and boiling point is 64.7 ℃. Because it was first discovered in distilled wood, it is also known as "wood alcohol" or "wood essence". The minimum dose for oral poisoning is about 100mg/kg body weight, and ingestion of 0.3-1g/kg can be fatal. Used for manufacturing formaldehyde and pesticides, and as an extractant for organic compounds and a denaturing agent for alcohol. The finished product is usually produced by reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen gas.
First aid measures
Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing and thoroughly rinse the skin with soap and water.
Eye contact: Lift eyelids, rinse with flowing water or saline solution, seek medical attention.
Inhalation: Quickly leave the scene and move to a place with fresh air. Keep the respiratory tract unobstructed. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If breathing stops, immediately perform artificial respiration and seek medical attention.
Ingestion: Drink plenty of warm water, induce vomiting or wash the stomach with water or 1% sodium thiosulfate solution, seek medical attention.
Storage precautions
Store in a cool and well ventilated dedicated warehouse, away from sources of fire and heat. The storage temperature should not exceed 37 ℃, and the container should be kept sealed. It should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, alkali metals, etc., and avoid mixing storage. Adopt explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities. Prohibit the use of mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to generating sparks. The storage area should be equipped with emergency response equipment for leaks and suitable containment materials.
