Introduction to Acetone:
Acetone, also known as dimethyl ketone, is the simplest saturated ketone with a molecular formula of C3H6O. It is a colorless and transparent liquid with a special spicy odor. Easy to dissolve in water and organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, ether, chloroform, pyridine, etc. Flammable, volatile, and chemically active.
The industrial production of acetone is mainly based on the isopropylbenzene method. Acetone is mainly used as a solvent in industries such as explosives, plastics, rubber, fibers, leather, oils, and paint. It can also be used as an important raw material for the synthesis of substances such as ketones, acetic anhydride, iodoform, polyisoprene rubber, methyl methacrylate, chloroform, epoxy resin, etc. It is also often used by criminals as a raw material for drugs, bromophenylacetone.
Hazard Overview
Health hazards: Acute poisoning is mainly manifested as an anesthetic effect on the central nervous system, resulting in fatigue, nausea, headache, dizziness, and irritability. Severe cases may experience vomiting, shortness of breath, spasms, and even coma. Irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. After oral administration, there is a burning sensation in the lips and throat, followed by dry mouth, vomiting, coma, acidosis, and ketosis.
Chronic effects: Long term exposure to this product may cause dizziness, burning sensation, pharyngitis, bronchitis, fatigue, and irritability. Long term repeated contact with the skin can cause dermatitis.
Explosive hazard: This product is extremely flammable and irritating.
First aid measures
Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing and thoroughly rinse the skin with soap and water.
Eye contact: Lift the eyelids and rinse with flowing water or saline solution. Seek medical attention.
Inhalation: Quickly leave the scene and move to a place with fresh air. Keep the respiratory tract unobstructed. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If breathing stops, immediately perform artificial respiration. Seek medical attention.
Ingestion: Drink plenty of warm water and induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.
Storage method:
1. This product is highly flammable and has a serious fire hazard, belonging to Class A fire hazardous substances. Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated place, away from heat sources, ignition sources, and contraindicated substances. All containers should be placed on the ground. However, acetone that has been stored and recycled for a long time often contains acidic impurities that are corrosive to metals.
2. Packaged in 200L (53USGal) iron drums with a net weight of 160kg per drum. The interior of the drum should be clean and dry. Store in a dry and well ventilated place, with a temperature maintained below 35 ℃. During loading, unloading, and transportation, prevent violent impacts and exposure to sunlight and rain. Store and transport according to the regulations for fire and explosion prevention chemicals.
3. Storage precautions: Store in a cool, well ventilated dedicated warehouse, away from sources of fire and heat. The storage temperature should not exceed 29 ℃. Keep the container sealed. It should be stored separately from oxidants, reducing agents, and alkalis, and avoid mixing storage. Adopt explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities. Prohibit the use of mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to generating sparks. The storage area should be equipped with emergency response equipment for leaks and suitable containment materials.
